Tomorrow is the day

We should actually break ground tomorrow…. we’ll see?

Building Permit in Hand

May 24, 2008

Well, the highlight this week is that the building permit came in on Tuesday.  I think we were all expecting it to take longer so no one was scheduled to work.

Permit

We did ride around to look at brick last weekend.  We were able to find the brick we like (the top one below) with gray mortar and a brown roof, with gray mortar and a black roof, with white mortar and a brown roof but (of course) we want to see it in white mortar and a black roof.  The brick rep says that does not exist in Pitt County.  But that is such an important decision we feel like we have to take a look and be certain that is what we want.  I kind of feel like Suzy is just saying “OK” because that is the one that I like the best.  Those decisions that are “OK, just go with that one” usually turn into “I hate this Brick and I wish you would not have picked it” so it looks like we are loading 4 kids int the car some time this week to do a slow driveby of someone stranger’s house.  Just to be certain and for my own safety.

They are supposed to dig footings this week so we need to order the Brick Monday or Tuesday.

Not Much Action

May 16, 2008

So, this week we basically filled in the hole that we dug last week.  Filled it with sand and used a steam roller to pack it down for a good base under the house.

We are stalled for now – waiting on the architect to finish the last minutes changes to the plans.  Having Him put his “Seal” on them prevents a lot of hoops for us putting a TV room on the third floor as part of the attic.  Since we don’t have those plans, we can’t get a building permit.  Since we don’t have a building permit, we can’t dig the footings.  Hopefully we will get them this afternoon or Monday – they are supposed to be at the printer today.

Have a good weekend!

Brick Decisions

May 7, 2008

One of the first things we have to do is choose a Brick we want for the house.  Here are three of the four we are considering.  Thoughts?

and of course:

Luke, what’s all this dirt doing in my hole?

May 7, 2008

I swung buy to talk with Mr. Tozer today about the layout of the house on the lot and found this situation.  They had removed all of the organic matter to get down to some real dirt (read:  Eastern NC Clay).

Basically it is a 5 foot deep hole that they are going to place a tarp on the bottom of and then fill with packed sand.

Here is the Mammoth garage for all the kids bikes:

And the site where the house will sit:

I was so excited that I took Meg and Ava over there after Dance class.  We had a talk on the way over there about how they had to stay clean and could not roll in the mud since they had their dance clothes on.  Then Megan promptly ate it.  These Pictures give you an idea of how deep the hole is though.

After Megan’s Slip and Fall, we took off to try to get the stains out before Tomorrow’s Recital Practice.

Lot is cleared and the House is staked

May 5, 2008

After a pretty Crazy weekend, we went by this morning to find the lot completely cleared and the house corners staked off. You can sort of get a feel for how the back yard is going to look.

I took both girls to school today.  Ava and I had some time to kill so we stopped by the lot to see what was going on.  There was a bull dozer and a Track Hoe (he heeee) there.  We walked around for a second.  Looks like there are still a lot of trees to take down but there was a big pile of trees laying there.

Here’s Ava doing here finest Lorax impression:

And I let here Climb on the Track Hoe.  She was kinda concerned and had a Death Grip on the Handle:

but basically, not much going on:

Starting Point

May 2, 2008

Here is a shot of the lot before we started knocking trees down.  There are a lot of Great Hard woods on that not for a filled in swamp.  We tried to get all the Gum Ball Trees down and I think we had to cut down only two pines.

Before it all began

Let’s get it started in here

May 2, 2008

So, I have decided that this time we are not going to push photos to everyone but invite you to subscribe to our Blog (click the little Red box in the address bar and add us to your Google Reader). Suzy and I have so much free time right now that I we decided to build a house. We hired a contractor named Len Tozer who is well respected in town and has a reputation for being meticulous. That is what we need right now – we can’t be part time contractors like we were on the Westview Drive House Project.

We are thinking it will be 18 months. Hoping for less but that is not the way things work with us. It always takes twice as long or we have twice as many! We will keep you posted on the progress.
